I have a 1982 Quantum 2-door hatchback and have been searching forever for someone that might know of another vw or audi that this car might cross-over. I have found none, so I am now also looking for a fairly easy engine swap for the car but have had no help on that either. If anyone out there knows of an engine swap, car cross-over, or performance suspension for the car please let me now. thanks

Audi 4000 was the same chassis, the 2.1L 5-cylinder was the big Kahuna for this car. You didn't say what engine was in yours. There were three choices for the 1982, a 1.6l turbo dsisel, a 1.7L CIS gasoline and a 2.1L 5-cylinder.

Your easiest swap will be to find a GTI 82-84 or 85-87 Cabrio for the 90 hp 1.8l engine only, this was a tranverse application instead of longitudinal like the Quantum. Your transmission should bolt up to this engine. The 5-cylinder has different subframe, ball joints, radiator, etc. VERY involved to swap. Would have to have a good donor car w/intact front end for all the pieces that would be necessary. Somewere mid to late 80's injection was changed to CIS-E and then to digifant. CIS-E I think is doable but the CIS was a wonderful, simple system. Right off the bat hp would go from 74 to 90hp and there are a lot of tricks you can do to the GTI motor. Your gearing is still pretty tall for performance, perhaps a later model 4-cylinder Audi 4000 or A4 might be the ticket for a transmission. Also, now that I think about it, 1985 only Quantum wagon had the 1.8l engine, very rare but not as rare as your coupe. That would be perfect for you, but most of these cars have long gone to the crusher.

I'm about to do the 2.0L ABA OBD1 swap into mine this spring so I'll let you know what snags I run into. I'm guessing the 2.0L 3A Audi engine is another option that would be pretty easy. I got this engine complete with 35k miles cheap, so I have to put it into something. Do you have a cargo cover and inside hatch trim on your coupe? Those are the 2 things missing in mine...
