Here's the bottom line, I had the same symptoms. I went to VW dealer, gave them the model number on back of the cluster, and the VIN, they ordered the correct cluster and set the exact mileage. I put the cluster in and it worked perfect. It cost about $350 throught the dealer My VW is a 1999 TYPE III Wolfsburg 2.0

NOTE: with the old cluster malfunctioning, the CIL was always activated!!!

BobD, I was going to replace my cluster in Dec. when I put my cabrio to bed for the winter. I do notice that the speedo works more in the cold weather.Must be the lack of condensation. If that offer is good for me, I would love to send you my 95 cabrio cluster. stevedab@comcast.net

No worries guys.
Just send me an email when your sending the cluster.
I'm working on the clusters ee-prom, hacking away!
("eeproms" hold all the information)
I'm now able to "adjust" the odometer,
and even choose the option for the clock to run in 24hr mode. On this unit, I have the odometer set at 8,002.
See photo attached.
This is my buddys cluster....I'm gonna send it back to him with 900,000 on it!!!
See how long it takes him to notice it!!

Let me see,

Do you have a 12V supply,
2 x Function generators,
And a scope. Good one.

Go to one of my first post here on this topic.
Look for picture DSC6.jpg.
Do you see how many components are there?
I have 4 diferent cluster here in my hands, and they are all al little different.

You can't just change components till it works...
It's not really possible. Hence the need for a function generator and a scope.

You also said your temp & fuel gauge are acting up?

If so, just dump the cluster and buy one off Ebay.
Seriously, your cluster has too many components to just
swap them around until it works....

ok
i now itīs crasy but think about this the car has 8 years and still feels smooth and strong, just one time the engine stars to be crazy and it was the relay that controls the coputer of the engine only this, so i start to feel mad with this failure and i like to you now "do it your self" y change the oil and the filters also the brake pads.

so i think that maybe this plan that i have, maybe works, but itīs ok put in my shoes in this moment i donīt have money to buy the cluster (any way i send you a photo)

ok amigo thanks any way , see you

I am having the same issue as so many others with the inst cluster. The speedometer & tach work only intermittently. Like everyone else, it seems to work best when cold and will continue to work until car is turned off. Then it wont work again until cold again. Tach sometimes jitters around zero when it isn't working.

The odometer/tripodometer still work and the car shifts ok and drives normally. (cruise hasnt worked for years so I havent tried any experiments with the cruise control on/off).

Checked the wiring/gnd connections as specified in all of the other posts. VSS seems to be working ok. Pulled the inst cluster out/apart but didn't see any bad solder joints. However, since both tach & speedometer stop working together & odometer still works, I am sure that it is in the cluster. All other gauges in cluster work perfectly.

I am suspecting it is something with the v-reg on the cluster that supplies power to the stepper motors for the speedo & tach - but don't have the means to debug. I dont have function gen or scope, so I cant play with cluster.

BobD, are you still willing to fix clusters for ~$50? It is my wifes car so I dont really want the car out of commission for too long.

Details: '95 Jetta, 2.0 ABA, auto-tranny.
Cluster: mph, 1HM-919-053E (looks just like images in this thread)

Yes,
I've had three people contact me for this problem.
The first one I fixed is still going.
And I haven't heard from the others...."No news is good news?"

Couple questions,
How long has this been a problem for you?
When the Tach isn't working, and you shut the car off, do you see the
Tach and/or the speedo needle still vibrating for a few seconds, then stop?

If so, vehicle grounds are Good. And the cluster is the problem.
Where are you located?
I'll turn the cluster around as fast as I can.

Problem just started this week (weds or thurs).
- Yes, when the cluster isn't working, the tach/speedo still vibrate for a few seconds after turning off the vehicle.

I checked the gnd/wiring and have narrowed it down to the cluster.

Sending you email...

Thanks

I just got the cluster back today from BobD and it worked perfectly on the test drive. Thanks a lot.

It turns out that it was the tach stepper motor that was bad on my cluster. BobD fixed it and had it shipped in less than 24hrs & he was great at contacting me during the whole process.

If anyone else is having problems with their cluster, don't hesitate contacting him to see if he can fix it. I advise sending it UPS or FedEx since I mailed it USPS and it took several days to get through customs and slowed down the process - so much for "priority mail". Bob shipped it back UPS and it was much faster.

Just sent an e-mail to Bob and would like to thank him on both topic threads on the subject again... THANKS!!! Really quick turn around and the workmanship is fantastic... He saved me a ton of money since I didn't have to go to the dealership or buy an unknown on eBay... It looks as though he is having some fun with this but now he seems to have mastered the task, what will he do next? Thanks again and thanks to the forum... What a great resource!!

Thanks, Karl

Hi Karl,
I'm glad to help. No problem.

Your cluster would have been pricing to fix/replace!
Your cluster is an A3 indigo. Rare...and expensive!
And yours was the first I've seen.

Nice, and good luck.
