My '99 Passat started running very rough a couple days ago. It was obvious it wasn't running on all 4 cylinders. No power when trying to excelerate...Forgive my verbage, I'm not a mechanic.... I disconnected the line that connects to spark plug #2 and nothing happened. When I disconnected the others, the engine would die, so I deducted that #2 was the one not working. I finally took it in to get looked at by a professional. They tell me the power output stage is bad and needs replacing, and coil #2 is burned out. They will replace spark plugs as well while they're working on it. Total will run me about $700. Does the diagnosis seem accurate, and price reasonable for such a repair?

Replacing the module is easily done yourself for under $150. Nothing complicated. The coil pack is also along the same lines. I would change the module first see how it runs then try the coil pack. Coil pack change out is rare. Also the spark plugs are easy. For just the cost of the spark plugs around 6-10 bucks each . For aluminum heads use anti seize compound on each plug.
There are a bunch of online parts dealers. Autohaus in Arizona is where I got mine.

Consider getting the aftermarket brand. It's about 2/3 the price of the Bosch. I've been running on one for over a year now and it works fine.

The changeout is too easy. It's located on top of the air cleaner under a cover. Whatever you do, don't pull the heat sink out from the air cleaner lid. Just remove the two screws, clean off the old thermal goo, apply new goo (supplied with the new one), and mount the new one.

As far as plugs go, you may or may not need them. They have nothing to do with this failure. This happens on a lot of 98 and 99s and for some reason, it's always cylinder 2.

I also had the Power Output Stage (aka Ignition Control Module) go bad at about 120kmiles. I ordered one of the aftermarket parts. It is sold in europe under the "Vemo" or "vierol" brand, but i traced it down to this part:

I was curious if any of you have good or bad experience with the aftermarket parts (especially this one is a dirt cheap chinese knock-off for 45 euro, or about 65 US$).

cheers

You start playing with fire when you use aftermarket products on the VW/Audi's.

Bremi makes the coils for the factory and you can get a bremi coil for less than dealer price.

COILS ARE A COMMON PROBLEM ON THESE CARS...
So is the power stage.

Replace power stage, ALL coils, and plugs at the same time - takes about 20 mins.
