I HEAR A HUMMING NOISE THAT GOES ON & OFF AND SEEMS TO BE COMING FROM THE RIGHT (PASSENGER) SIDE IN TRUNK. PUT FUEL INJECTOR CLEANING FLUID AT THE LAST GAS FILL UP. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON. MANUAL SAYS TO CK. & CLEAN FUEL INJECTORS. iS THIS WHERE THE NOISE IS COMING FROM? WHAT DO i NEED TO DO? IS IT HARMFUL TO CONTINUE DRIVING? APPROX. HOW MUCH $ AM I LOOKING AT TO REPAIR AND/OR REPLACE THIS PROBLEM? HELP. NEED ADVICE...

Does the humming start when the radio is turned on? Also, the anti theft sensors, amps for the radio are located under the panel in the trunk's left. Or do you rear the noise when driving and no radio on? Could be a rear wheel bearing. 94 to 00 C280 have a problem with wheelbearings.

THANKS FOR RESPONDING SO FAST! THE NOISE IS WHEN THE RADIO IS OFF. SOUNDS VERY SIMILAR TO THE ANTENNA GOING UP. I CAN'T HEAR IT WITH THEN RADIO ON.

I only does this when the radio is off? But is sounds like a antenna going up and down? When the car is stopped and the motor runnig is the sound there? Also, is the antenna fully going up and town. When they get old the plastic gears inside wear and they skip gogs and the motor starts to make noise until it "thinks" the antenna is up or down. If the Antenna is making a noise like you describe, it would be present during operation, and then after a while the motor fails and the antenna stops in whaever position it is in, however the motor even when failing could make noise for a while, as the cogs break first. When you driving does the noise vary pitch were increasing or decreasing speed?

If I remember correctly, the vacuum actuator for the door locks is positioned on the right side of the trunk area. Don't think that will cause the "Check Engine" light to come on though. I will suggest having the car scanned for error codes ASAP. Driving the car in that condition could damage the engine depending what is wrong.

I had one of those acutators start acting up, but the noise stopped when the door was finally locked. Also no check light, just cost. But you correct the right way is to have it scanned. Not every system is on the progam, but most critical systems are. Auto Zone will do it for free,

AFTER A WHILE THE NOISE STOPS, USUALLY WHEN I REACH 50 MPH OR MORE. I WAS WONDERING IF IT COULD BE THE ALARM SYSTEM BECAUSE WHEN I UNLOCK THE DOOR USING MY KEY, I CAN HEAR THE NOISE ONCE. WHEN I START THE CAR, THEN I HEAR IT GOING ON AND OFF, JUST LIKE THE ANTENNA SOUND. MY ANTENNA GOES UP WHEN THE CAR IS ON BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW FAR UP IT IS SUPPOSED TO GO SO I DON'T KNOW IF THAT IS THE PROBLEM. ALSO, MY MANUAL SAYS THAT WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON, IT MEANS THAT MY FUEL INJECTORS NEED TO BE CLEANED. I PUT A CAN OF FUEL INJECTOR FLUID AT MY LAST GAS FILLUP AND SOMEONE SAID THAT IT TAKE AT LEAST THREE FILLUPS WITH THIS FLUID TO WORK. I DO NOT, HOWEVER, HAVE A PROBLEM WITH ACCELERATION. SOMEONE ELSE TOLD ME THAT EVEN THOUGHT THE FUEL INJECTORS WERE CLEAN, ONLY THE MERCEDES DEALERSHIP CAN MAKE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT GO OFF (PROBABLY A WAY TO MAKE A QUICK BUCK). PLEASE ADVISE, I TRUST YOU GUYS BEFORE ANYONE ELSE....

CHECKED WITH AUTOZONE. THEY ONLY CAN DO IT FOR CARS 1996 AND OLDER. THE BENZ DEALERSHIP WANTS $75.00 PLUS TAX. ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS?

(thought I'd update this old thread)

The humming noise in the trunk (passenger side) may be the air pump. Mine goes on for several minutes (96 C280) right after I start the car.

I have the sam humming noise coming from the right rear side of my L.R. county.
It's very loud but I'm also having a problem with my front left suspension. The front end is very low in the morning but when I begin to drive and hit speeds of maybe 40 mph it raises
Could the loud humming noise that I hear when I start and drive have somthing to do with this?

Excuse my ignorance,
but what is a "L.R. county"?

Do you have air adjustable shocks/struts?

and WHEATY
If you want to reset your "engine light" just pull fuse 32 & 33 (IIRC)
you may have to turn the key to the 1 or 2 position after you pull the fuses for it to reset
