98 C280 power seats work intermittently

I have a 1998 C280 sport that has a problem with the power seats. You can adjust the seats most of the time, but sometimes when you get in the vehicle, you can't move either of the front seats. If you wait for 5-10 minutes, they'll then be able to start working when you push the switch! It's so unpredictable. I replaced the drivers side door switch/sensor (pushes in and out when you open and close the door). This cut down on the problem maybe 40%. Could it be a fuse/electrical problem? Checked all fuses, and they're not broken. When it happens, BOTH front seats do not work. NEED TECH HELP!! Thanks!

The power seat in our model will only operate when the drivers door is open with no key in the ignition and won't operate when the door is closed unless the car is started. Also, the drivers headrest won't operate unless the engine if turned off and the drivers door is open. This was confirmed by my dealer. Is the engine running or the key in the start position during the wait? Or is it running? It is a crazy system and drove me crazy for a while, until I found out how they work. Safety features. Sometimes I think Mercedes overdoes the safety a bit. If you have the power passenger seat if should operate all the time, if it does, then there is probably nothing wrong except for Mercedes design.

Hello, I agree it's kind of crazy. If I open the drivers door, I can usually adjust the seat before I close the door, or if the key is in the ignition in position #2. If it doesn't allow any adjustments with the door open or in position #2, I sometimes can play with the door jam button while pressing the seat adjust, and with luck, it will move like normal. If that doesn't work, then the car seat is usually stuck in that position until you try it again either 5-10 minutes later (while your're driving, or if its been sitting for that time. Just can't figure it. Doesn't seem like a safety feature. Just seems like a short somewhere? I wonder if all other C280's do the same thing?

I don't know about the delay thing you speak of, as I usually adjust my seat once and leave it that way, no one else in the family drives my car. But as I recall as long as the engine is running the seats adjustments work. You did someone to test the fuse under the hood when this delay happens and see if they are OK. Perhaps playing with the door jam button loosened a wire up?

Thanks for the reply. The switch was replaced with a brand new one. "Playing" with it was merely pressing it in and out synchronized with pushing one of the seat buttons. If I know the safety sensor that's disabling both seats for a certain amount of time I would put my money on it not working as designed. I find it hard to believe that if a person enters the vehicle and can't adjust the seats (even with the door open or key in the ignition), that any company (including Mercedes Benz) would design a car to do that. Something is definitely not working correctly, and to this date I haven't found a resolution. Still fishing on a resolution.

I am going out today for a few hours I am going to check my seats and see exactly what they do under the conditons we spoke of. I never really paid attention, as I felt this all operation was a safetly thing, but now that you bring up the subject I am cusious to see what exactly my seats are doing. I do know the passenger seat is not effected. and will work all the time, with the door closed and the ignition on. It might have something to do with the smart start feature, which has given people a lot of problems. I'll file a report later.

I know this post is from long back. But what was the conclusion? I have a c240 98 model doing the same thing. Someone had suggested that the battery is going down so the car regulates so u can not move the seats in order for the car to start.

Check the comfort relay in the trunk. Remove the trunk liner and then the black plastic liner in the rear of the trunk (closest to the seats). Underneath should be the comfort relay. My 99 c280 sport is having a similar problem and this is what I have been told to do. Good luck!
