Sounds like the coolant temperature sensor is not working, check that.

I think Port Fellamay is right. Alot of BMW's sensors and switches can be checked with a multimeter. Perhaps someone has the necessary data so you can check and see if your sensor is truely bad?

I have same fact pattern as Diakonos. Have '94 740i. Where is the coolant temp. sensor located? Is this sensor also described as an engine temp. sensor? Yes, I am new at this! Thanks.

I just purchased 92 735iL. I have rough idle too. I was told by the previous owner that he replaced the plugs but not the plug wires. Is this the cause of the rough idle. This is my first bmw. I like the car

I wouldn't think it is the plug wires. Check carefully for vacuum leaks. Does it seem to idle ok when cold? Things like rubber boots and the large hoses develop cracks. Also the idle control valve could be suspect. They can be cleaned to see if it affects the idle quality, just be careful not to let the electrics get soaked in carb cleaner. Also clean the throttle body.

on the 735-the engines are different than the v8 you posted on. you have a 6 which needs a valve adjustment every 15k miles-and that has a big effect on idle. a new post would be the way to go in the future. not all e32s are created equal. but, your first bmw, there's lots to learn. good luck, chuck.
