easy remedy for loose spark plug? James Dwyer James Dwyer jadwyer@unity.ncsu.edu
Hi, I recently experienced my first VW engine problem with my new style 99 Jetta 2.0L. Spark plug from cylinder 3 came loose and I am having trouble getting at it to put it back in and tighten it. Is there and easy way to do this? Please help if you can. Thanks.

Good Afternoon, James,

Walk to your local parts house with the old spark plug and buy a "thread
chaser" tap to clean up the threads. Follow the instructions that come with
the tool; they'll probably want you to start the engine for a second or two
with the spark plug out in order to blow out the chips that have fallen into
the cylinder, which is OK. KD Tools made the version that I use. Buy a new
spark plug also, perhaps even a new set.

If that "don't do it", you'll need to have the car towed to a shop that
knows how to install a Heli-Coil or similar thread repair insert. Worst
case scenario is a new cylinder head, but unless the threads are really
banged up, chasing them will usually do the job
