Audi A6, 2.7T transmission problems

Hello,

Since about 2 weeks, there is something strange going on with the transmission. The car has almost no more acceleration power and finally, I took the car to my cousin, and the VAG diagnostic gives the error code P0741: Torque converter clutch circuit performance or stuck off. Deleting this error code resolves the problem for a couple a days and then it occurs again, until you delete it again.
What are the possible causes ?

Start by checking your ATF level. May want to think about changing the tranny fluid and filter.

OK, I will checj the ATF level again. The tranny oil has been renewed 2, 3 months ago, after the transmission had been repared.

Make sure the ATF is at operating temperature and the car is running when you check the level. Otherwise, you will under fill the tranny.

I finally found the time to check the transmission oil. I have noticed that although the oil has been changed recently, about 5.000 miles ago, it was again black. But no traces of metal debris in the oil. Anyway, after the oil change, the problem still exists. No normal acceleration, only if I accelerate 2, 3 times ( upto 4.500 RPM and a kind of pumping with the gaspedal) and only then, the car accelerates normally.

Sounds like your torque converter might be damaged possibly. I am swapping out a tranny on a passat right now for the same reason. Both me and another guy with the same problem noticed low hydraulic pressure and we both had damaged torque converter seals initially.

It's some sort of mechanical internal damage, wether it's just the front pump(torque converter), or the clutch I'm betting it's more likely the torque converter. But I am not sure, transmissions aren't very serviceable and you usually are better off replacing the whole thing since you gotta drop it to do any sort of torque converter repairs.

What sort of repairs did you have done to the transmission. Malfunctions of the tranny often cause internal damage.

The tranny has been repaired in january 2004 by a German transmission specialist. I had also removed the engine and checked the torque converter. This was OK at that time. The problem started in July after the following "incident" : I accelerated in "manual" position, without noticing it. As the engine came up to 6.500 RPM, I realised that I was driving in "manual" and changed immediately to "full automatic". It could be that I am imagining things, but the problem started since that day. Also, I think that I have to say that the engine has been chipped and instead of the 230 hp, it now deliveres about 320 hp.
It the torque converter is damaged, should I not hear some kind of noise ?
I have contacted the German, and he thinks it's an electronic problem. 2 possibilities: the electronic command in the tranny itself or the electronic Bosch command, that is somewhere in the interior.

As for the exact repairs that have been made, I believe the main problem before the tranny repair was the clutch. The car had been driven by the previous owner with too little tranny oil. In any position, (even in "P" and "N" the wheels were turning.

Hi, had the same issue with P0741. Right now, Mechanic has replaced torque converter and is rebuilding the trans. He said the torque converter was throwing out metal fragments into trans. Also, 4 clutches were burnt. The job is costing 3600 total.

Finally, I have found the solution and it is very simple: I am using an K&N air filter: the oil that you have to use to regenerate it after cleaning, has set on the air mass meter. I had to clean this AMM with brake disc cleaner. Problem solved !

Hmm interesting, seems that the code was a side effect of air fuel metering of the mass air sensor. The clutch circuit simply wasn't locking up correctly as a result, and the engine didn't detect the mass air problem because it was in computational means.

That's one thing to always check before jumping into any transaxle problem. You have to be certain absolutely that the engine is operating correctly, or the codes can be simply misleading side effects.

Hello, I have one question:
when you say air mass metter did you mean air mass flow sensor or something else? Do you know a location of AMM?
I try to solve the problem with codes:
17125 - Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off.
P0741 - 35-00 - -

P1624 - 35-00 - -
From outside, engine and trany work good, no signs of problem. Normal start, acceleration, but check engine light comes on every 2 days o less, and scan shows codes mentioned above. Please, help.
Thanks

I'm getting the same code after installing a rebuilt torque converter 40 K miles ago. I am told that there is a seal or o-ring that fails causing the issue. I'm not sure if Audi has upgraded this part for future rebuilds. Maybe Fast knows/.

I have the P0471 code and the dealer states the TC needs to replaced 3K ouch! I read a couple replys that the K and N air filter can cause the issue, I have one which is why I am asking if that really works? Also, what happens if I keep driving the car?

I know a lot about these cars mechanically and electrically but the transmission is not my area of expertise. I consulted with a Trans Specialist who confirmed the issue is a leaking seal inside the torque converter. I'm told this leak causes slippage and starts to wear out the clutch. Prolonged usage will subsequently cause metal to metal wear (once the clutch surface wears through). Ultimately this contamination will take out the rest of the transmission. I've stopped driving mine. I'm just a little frustrated since I just rebuilt the engine after my timing belt idler pulley failed and caused the timing belt to jump (6 bent intake valves). I'm trying to get psyched up to attempt this job now.
