Recently bought a 98 Cabriolet with rear vinyl window that has some scratches and "yellowed" appearance. Am curious if it can be unzipped and replaced with an AM replacement. Have searched web and only found complete tops. If so, please advise sources for the replacement w/zipper (dealer?).

Thanks

If the piece comes off without much work, then I'd imagine you can buy one from the dealer. Never hurts to call up and price a new one.

Good Evening, SandFlea,

I've actually done this repair, although it has been 8 or 9 years since the last time.

The window (8G0 871 473 C) is more than just zipped in. Embedded within the sealer of the plastic window is a heating wire. When you apply 12 Volts to this wire, it softens the sealer sufficiently to melt it and seal the new window against the top. You also use the heating wire to soften things up for removal as well.

In any case, before you do any heat sealing on installation, you MUST use this elaborate clamping tool system (VAG 1742) or the new rear window WILL leak.

Details are in our Factory CD:

By the way, the rear plastic window is a Dealer-only item and retails for around $610.00......
