The shift lock cable is not doing it's job. I can observe correct movement at both ends (the ignition switch and the shift lever housing). I can see the problem: the cable/piston does not extend far enough to engage the lock recess on the shift lever. I followed Bentley procedures for adjusting/gapping, but that made no difference. I even extended the adjustment to its maximum length, and that made no difference. It actually looks as if the piston is about 1/4" too short (that's how much further it would need to go to engage the lock recess). Any experienced ideas? I'm wondering if something has broken off or perhaps something is missing. The Bentley manual does not address this problem, and the Bentley diagrams don't give me a close-up view of these parts. The shift lock solenoid is working correctly, it passes all the tests. I'm stumped & concerned; what could possible cause this issue?
The manual you have contains the full factory information. If you've followed the procedures in the manual, then, unfortunately, we have nothing more to suggest. You may have some other worn or broken part preventing proper adjustment.
