Late 1984 Scirocco JH 8 valve

I'm posting this in the 1985 forum because the Hall sender has the rectangular connector rather than the 83-84 oval connector.

I need to replace the Hall sender because its connector broke and is floppy at the dist housing. This is my first time pulling/disassembling the distributor and I am nervous about it -- really don't want to eff anything up.

Bentley shows a good diagram but the dis/re-assembly instructions are a little terse. For one thing it shows a pin that retains the trigger wheel but doesn't mention how to deal with it. Also it mentions using 2 screwdrivers to pry off the trigger wheel but nothing about pressing it back on. I assume the seal at the engine end should be renewed, but can the various snap rings and washers be re-used.

Any tips, cautions, pointers to tech notes, etc would be very welcome. Consider me a rank amateur at this job. :)

A good hall sensor kit will come with all the parts required (screws, snap rings etc).

The wheel will slide down into place, once in place, line-up the pin "slots" and tap the pin into place.

I have a video for a vanagon: (same idea for yours)


The video isn't that great as I don't tilt my head far enough some times (video camera in my glasses)... and the static noise (to cover radio music) can be a bit annoying.

Thanks Thomas. Your video is a great help.

Hopefully my shutter wheel will come off easier than that one did.

Since it's my first time removing the distributor, I will probably do it at TDC just to be on the cautious side. But I see what you mean the important thing is that it goes back to where it was, housing and rotor both. Maybe I'll just take a photo for reference.

The video doesn't show removing a plastic pin for the electrical connector, but does show you finger pressing it back in. My new sender assembly has a hole under the plug terminal, for that pin I assume, but I can't see a pin on the old one on the car. Possibly that's why the old connector is loose at the distributor housing. If the pin is missing maybe I can substitute a small screw, if I can't source the part.
