my 98 740 won't start.I drove it to work last week and was getting in it to leave, turn key the car started and then died ,tried it again and it shut down again.so i thought it might be the battery so i changed it and now it's just clicks and no start.jump start it all it does is click.check all fuses which were good and jump terminal to starter and it turn over but won't start.fuel pump not comming on along with the starter.i was told the ems might be the problem but the door lock and alarm all work with the key.i don't think that need to be replaced.the ignition switch i checked and it's appears to function as it should with a test light.i don't have a schematic to chase these wires are there anyone that can help me out because i don't know what else to check besides going to the stealership.i also noticed that the ODB port has no signal what do i have to check for that. thanks.

I would try and scan for fault codes. You will need a factory level tool Doesn't have to be dealer. It is likely something minor, so bringing it to a bmw pro may be your best bet. Could well be the EWS system. Do you have another key to try? If the EWS is at fault, many times the starter will not crank. Check the crank position sensor first, it is in the trans bellhousing reads drive plate ring gear teeth.

Hi there, if the starter solenoid is clicking means there is no sufficient power coming to it or the solenoid is bad. In case the EWS is bad there would not be even clicking heard from the starter solenoid, but it's possible, and scan for fault codes. Check all the fuses again, battery load test, fuel pump relay. Please elaborate "OBD connector does not have a signal" At the time when you jump the starter did you have the ignition on?

I am having the exact same problem so I was told to bypass the EWS and it would crank over and act like it wanted to start then it would just crank and crank
