2001 GLS 2.0, 134,xxx miles

So the ride in the Golf has gotten progressively worse over the last few years, to the point where one might think I had replaced the springs with steel rods. The problem is worse in the back, but bad all-around. I did replace right rear shock a few years back, but it really didn't make much of a difference. Right rear is still the worst corner of the car. It's just jarring and terrible.

Something tells me that new shocks really won't help that much, and the springs aren't broken, although with 134,xxx miles i'm sure they too are tired. My mechanic told me he thought that he saw a torn frame bushing (can't remember exactly what he said) so could that be the cause? He did replace the rear shock mounts (my idea) but that made no difference.

Steering is also very sloppy, car just handles terribly. If I want to keep this car for a good bit longer, what should I replace to resurrect the ride and handling characteristics that this car naively exhibits? It used to be a hoot to drive, now it is uncomfortable and un-fun. Oh, and thinking of autocross and rallyx in the future as well, in case that alters any thoughts.
