Hi just purchased my vanagon after it had been sitting for time, main ignition parts replaced ie leads plugs cap rotor arm and most connections cleaned including earths ... but the problem is with the idle which very slightly fluctuates between 800 and 1000 and never stays constant. I might add that as far as I can tell all the vacuum pipes have been sorted to. Also it has now stopped running, hard wiring the fuel pump has got it started as pump was receiving 0.5v. Any ideas?
Ah ha! ... seems to work fully now after loose coonection behind air cleaner ... feeling stupid now. However now have hot strting issue as well as idle erratic. Replace ground to gearbox nose - no change, what it does do is lose power very quickly when trying to restart so going to try and bypass ignition wiring (cleaned all connections aready and alternator pumping out 14v at 1500rpm). Has anyone got any other ideas? cheers for the help
If your fuel pump is working properly, check the F/I temperature sensor. Reguarding the erattic idle, check the timing with a timing lite and set it exactly on the V cut into the crank pulley at idle. Sometimes too much advance is set and the ECU goes hunting looking for the correct setting.
