My check engine light comes on an goes off periodically. The code is P0722 (output speed sensor). I'm told if the sensor fails, it is integrated with the transmission control module, and the only fix is to replace the transmission control module. With this light on and stored data, I can't pass the emissions test. I'm told that I should expect to pay $2000 for labor and $800 - $1000 in parts. The module is located inside the transmission.

The transmission shifts perfectly and their are no other issues with the car. Does anyone have any idea how to minimize the costs to fix this? This one hurts.

Not sure if I copied the correct page... here's the Output Speed Sensor (#12 in PDF):

The Transmission Control Module is located under the plastic Rain Tray Cover at the base of the windshield.

Thanks for the response. Just so I'm clear. On a 2005 Audi A4 Cabriolet the TCM is located in the transmission and the speed sensor is in the module, correct? You reference it being at the base of the windshield, and that's the first I've heard of that.

My info is for the 5 speed Automatic Transmission 01V

You didn't mention what you had in the car, so that's what I picked.

For the info I linked, the TCM is under the rain tray.

Is it a 6 speed auto? other?

Mechatronic - TCM, Tranmission Input & Output speed sensor, Multi-Function Range Switch

edit - yes, all in the transmission behind oil pan.

Going with rebuilt Mechatronic unit to be installed by a reputable transmission shop, will do the deal for $1000 including all labor compared to Audi at $2850. Will keep you posted.
