Trying to problem solve issue with 2001 aww 1.8t. put key into ingition turn to on position and no lights come on in the cluster, place key in door and alarm will no activate or deactivate only thing that happens is the windows will roll up and down if held in long enough. The high beam indicator works, blinkers, and back lights do work on cluster. Trying to figure out if ecu is no good or if immobilizer is no good. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you talking about the illumination lights or the oil, battery, coolant, MIL, ABS etc?

It's a no start as well then, yes?

yes, normally all ur lights would come on just before starting the car. I have none (i.e. engine light, abs, security, ) wondering if just getting another ecu would have them come on and then just getting it coded to cluster and immobilizer at the dealership.

I doubt that an ECU swap would solve this... since the ABS (separate ECU) also isn't glowing.

I would find a wiring diagram and study it inside out.... look at the cluster and see what all the lights have in common. Could be as simple as ignition switch.... but since you don't have alarm operation, ign switch might not be it.

Check all fuses... any recent repairs or flooding?

Any communication with any of the modules?

I've never undertaken such a full swap, but if all is plugged in as it should be, there should at least be some type of communication as well as "no communication with x ECU" stored in other ECUs... again just guessing.

Or even, an "ECU incorrectly coded" message?

Fuse 10, 11,15, 22, 23?

Fuse 176 (110 amp) on battery, feeds circuit 30 (power all the time) to ignition switch as well as J59 load reduction relay.

I might have missed some...

I hear many people had the same issue, problem being one of the lights being burned out, e.g tail light, fog light or side marker.
I have the same problem, but my car start and runs, everyhing else work except ilumination on the cluster.
This is the scan. of Vagcom:
My inspection is due this month.
and I am trying to beat the clock.

Hello, Ray

The central control module for comfort system (J393) should be located above the pedal cluster to the left of the steering column.

The data bus on board diagnostic interface (J533) is integrated into the car's instrument cluster.

Yeah, I had an axtra central control module for central convenience, with aid of VAG Com tool I programmed the new module and now is working, but the dimmer is still a pain, I ordered an Ebay instrument cluster and is on the way, thinking that it may be defective, but how, when I hit high beam lights with dimmer up, I see all thing on cluster but with too loud scream under the dash behind the cluster. could it be a switch somewhere?

Emergency! my cluster came today, I just hooked it and tried to start the car, but the car crunk and stall. I have Vag com and hooked it up, tried to access module address 46 central convenience, but no luck. and I could see a flashing yellow key symbol on the cluster.
but good news is that when I switch on lights, I can see now that the cluster is lighted without using high beam.
any knowledge of how to activate the cluster? the mileage on new cluster is close to what I have on the old one, so that would save me trouble for transfering info from old to new.

Key light is security, the car will start then shut right down because the immo is not coded to the cluster u are putting in, u must get it coded tO the immo in order for it to work, simple thing to have the dealership do. The only year u can do any type of swapping is 99.5 which is the immo 1, 2001 and up use immo 2 and immo 3.
