Have done research on the operation of the two fans on my son's 2000 1.8 but can't seem to get a clear idea of how they work under normal operation. If someone could explain it would be greatly appreciated.
Do both fans work in tandem? The only definite pattern I know is that the passenger side fan will start when the AC is started.
Neither fan is running when the car is warm and idling with the temp gauge at dead centered or as it moves to one notch towards warm.
I understand that they are two speed fans - is speed increased according to coolant temp?
Since drivers side fan is not operating when the other one is with the A/C on the fan must be bad.
I have not been able to get the fans to come on without having the A/C on. The temp gauge is not going past halfway (no overheating) but I assume they are not being signaled to start by either the Radiator Fan Switch or Coolant Fan Control Module and they should be replace.
Before you buy new fans... trigger them directly at their
harness plug connectors. Disconnect the harness plugs and
attach a jumper wire from battery negative to the ground
wire of the fan harness plug and then a positive wire to
either speed wire of the plug.
If one ore more speeds don't work on either fan, replace
