98 GTI Remote turns on alarm but doesn't lock

I've got a 98 GTI and I've got a question about the remote locks. The central lock button inside the car works fine. I can put the key in the door lock and turn it to the right to lock/close everything and arm the alarm. I can unlock the car with the remote. The problem is that when I hit the lock button on the remote the doors do not lock! The alarm does arm (little red LED starts blinking) but the doors don't actually lock.
Any Ideas??
thanks,
Bryan

Ive had that same exact problem. Your alarm thinks a door is open. Check at night when you try to arm it if the interior lights never turn off.

I basicly have to slam the door shut for it to register that the door is closed.

I think I may have figured out what it was this evening. I thought it could be the door earlier so I checked all the doors etc and it still did it.
The problem was that the radio was locked down in safe mode (I did not have the PIN and tried too many times) I got the PIN from the dealer and I reset the radio this evening, entered the PIN and the radio worked. The locks also started working again!
So it seems that the remote door locks will not lock if the radio is in safe mode.

The radio is tied to the alarm, but not that much!
The alarm only knows if the radio is actually in the dash...thats it.

If you lock the car, and you hear the horn honk. Then the alarm is set. The car assumes all doors are shut. Hood and trunk as well.

If you lock/arm your car with a door open, you should still hear the lock pump in the trunk run, and see the door lock pins go down. The horn will honk once to acknowledge the car is armed if you shut the last door within 30 seconds.

If you lock-arm your car and the car honks once, but the locks don't go down, then there may be an issue with the lock housing.
Also, if the LED is flashing at a steady pace...then yes, the alarm is set and done.

I'm not 100% sure on this!... But I believe on the GTI's there is a switch inside the lock housing that indicates the door pin is down.
I was in a wrecking yard one time and I saw a GTI door lock actuator. There was a small switch on the housing that closed a set of contacts when the pin was down.

I guess this was done to tell the pump the locks were engaged.
If this is what that little switch was for.....then that is a great idea.
In the winter my lock pump tends to run on, even though the doors are locked or unlocked. Thats because I have a small leak in the system. The pump picks up the leak and thinks the locks have not fully unlocked, or locked.
This switch would stop that from happening.

Or, there is a lost connection from the alarm to the pump.
When you arm your car, the alarm tells the pump to cycle the locks down.

Hope that helps :)

hmm, when I hit the look button I did not hear the lock pump, I specifically listened for it. It also did not honk.
I also tried it with the door open and got the same result.
However, the problem did go away after I fixed the radio. I guess that must just be a coincidence - perhaps I also closed the door 'just right' to get the door switch to work?
Anyways, it is working now and if it stops working again the first thing I will check is those door switches.

By the way Bob, I currently live in north carolina but I grew up just outside london and went to high school there! Most people down here think I'm from the UK when I tell them where I come from :)

I've gotten that....
I'll say "London".. and they will ask "England?".
Or if I'm on the phone they will ask.. "Where's your accent".

The doors are not the only items with switches.
If the interior lights are off, then most likely the door switches are fine.

There is also a switch in the trunk/hatch that is part of the locking mechanism, another under the hood, and one on the side of the radio.
I had a problem with the switch on the side of the radio.
When the warm weather would hit, the heat on the dash would cause something to expand, the switch would open circuit.... and the alarm would go off.

I basically ended disconnecting that input when I replaced the radio.

I put a photo of this on this forum... somewhere???

So my guess is...
When pressed on the radio, you may have "set" it a little snug into the dash.

If you have the ability to pull the radio, slide it out about 3" to 4" and look at the left side of the radio. (Steering wheel side) near the bottom.
You will see this little switch. It may not be making good contact.

The issue could be something else... but you'll have isolate 1 thing at a time.

that is exactly it.
When the dealer got me the pin they removed the radio and when I finally found time to reset the safe mode and put the pin in I noticed that the radio did not seem to set perfectly in the dash so I pushed it in all the way. It never occurred to me that there would be a switch there I figured the alarm would trigger by the wiring.

Well, thanks for the help guys! I'm glad I got this little mystery figured out!
