I have a 96 Passat VR6 the othe rday my ABS/Brake light came on and I lost headlights, heater and wipers. The brakes feel fine. Any ideas, coul dit be the ignition. They go out sometimes when i giggle the key in the ignition!
A VW dealer or aftermarket VW shop should be able to diagnose the problem and repair it much faster than you can yourself. By the time you purchase the manual and the part you may have spent nearly the same as what it will cost to have a shop do the job. And then, what if the problem is something else? Hopefully the shop will diagnose the problem correctly and only replace what is necessary.
Of course, I don't want to discourage you from trying to repair it yourself and purchasing our manual. However, sometimes it's best just to leave this sort of thing to a professional who may have even done the particular repair before and has the experience to do it right the first time.
From looking at the manual, yes. On some vehicles it is possible to access the rear (electrical part) of the ignition switch without removing the steering wheel and ignition switch housing. However, the '95-'97 Passats do not seem to be one of these vehicles.
Upon reconsideration, I would not consider this an easy repair and would again recommend that you consider taking it to a shop.
