1998 VW Jetta ABA motor, current mileage 77,765. I started the car up today and the check engine light came on, car runs fine, no misfires or anything not rough. I scanned the car with the vag-com and got code "17990-idle adaptation limit reached, P 1582 -35-10---intermittent" I checked everything under the hood, and didnt notice anything out place or broken. I also sprayed some wd40 trying to find a vaccuum leak with no luck. i cleared the code, and then restarted the engine, and the code came back, but this time didn't say intermittent. My idle speed checs ok with the vagcom measuring blocks, hoovering around 840-880 w/ and w/o a/c on. any ideas on what is causing this code to come up? thanks,
ben

i've never experienced it myself but from I've read on this site, it may be as simply as needing the throttle body to be cleaned. The procedure can also be found here

I do not agree with the cleaning of the throttle body link! The thead "Jetta dad" sent expains why! read the thread because I do not want to type it all again. However you have vag-com and can adapt the throttle body to the ECM so you do not have the problem the other guy I posted to does. You will most likely need a new throttle body if nothing else works. The big problem here is the car runs fine and people do not want to send the big bucks when the car runs fine. But this code causes the ECM change sxxx to what I call "limp mode" (you can limp to a garage) If you have an automatic trans you really want to fix this code! In limp mode the ECM changes shift points and if ignored will kill your trans. Everybody hates V.W auto trans and they are not that bad what kills most of them is codes like this that people ignore because car runs good. Also I can get throttle body alot cheaper then most you'll find.

yeah, i took the whole thing apart this morning, it was pretty nasty inside. cleaned it all up (off the car) and replaced the gasket, reset the basic settings, it runs like a champ, much more smoother than before. i think i might do my golf next. thanks to everyone who replied. no more codes. to anyone else, who needs to do this. it takes all but an extra 10 minutes to take it off and clean it right. the gasket is stocked by most vw dealerships and sells for 3 bucks.

so far so good (no light and no code). there was a lot of gum in there and cleaned up so well, pretty now :) I have read previous things in the past that say the way the VW's PVC system is designed, one of the worst things you can do is over fill the oil. I guess this causes excessive amounts to be sucked up through the PVC system which we all know goes right through that butterfly valve helping to gum it up. since i got the car about 3 years ago, i have always made sure never to over fill the system. who knows what the person did before me. I also think the low mileage might have something to do with the gum, never really gets a chance to burn it off (thats just my thought probably has nothing to to do with it thou)77000 miles on a 1998. anyways, something i wanted to point out is, in the bentley manual it says "when to reset the basic settings" and one of the reasons to do it is when there is an interuption in voltage, im assuming thats when the battery gets disconnected. i also noticed that if you reset the settings using vagcom, if you go under readiness, half the fields show failure. after driving the car through various conditions, full throttle, idle, and others, after about 20 minutes of driving it, they all show pass. I dont know if i have just gone off on a tangent or what, but i did both. i unhooked the battery for 10 minutes, then cleared codes (using vagcom) then reset my basic settings in field 098. I also noticed that afetr i did the cleaning, the car idled at about 2000 rpm for the first 15 minutes, then when i reset everything and test drove it, it is back down to 860 or so. ill keep everyone updated.

the readness failures are normal after disconnecting the battery. my kids 97 jetta (there by the name) failed inspection because the battery was disconnected the day before. driving for 20-30 minutes usually get all the sensors into ready mode

I have a 2001 jetta and my light comes on all the time. I live in Dallas I know it's time for a 120,000 check up. Does anyone know where I can get this done for less than the dealership?

msmar7 you posted your question on a post subject for engine codes p1582 and you need to open a new post for the questions you are asking. Just go to your local Auto Zone or a garage and have them pull your check engine light codes. Write the 5 digit numbers down and there can be more then 1 code. Then go to this link and tell us the results on a new post. http://tech.bentleypublishers.com/post!default.jspa?forumID=39
You need to start a new post not join an existing one because the subjects of the posts are different.

My 1997 VW GOLF K2 passed the vehicle inspection today but, during the inspection the code P 1582 returned. I found this great feedback an will clean the VW throttle body this weekend. I will report the results soon.

Hi,

I back with positieve news. I cleaned the throttle body as described in this forum. I used the throttle plate intake cleaner from M3 to clean the throttle and code P -1582 cleared the next day. Do not go to your local VW dealer and have them charge you mucho dollars for an easy fix. I things change I will report them right away. Thank you all.

I have a '99 Cabrio with 160K. I've been searching for info on this subject as I got that dreadful P1582 code. I also had a problem with the air pump failing which I fixed (bad fuse). After clearing the code, I now have the rough idle problem. I plan to clean the throttle body as recommended here.

My Q:
Using the bentley manual, I have been searching for the IAC valve. It is NOT where the pictures say so. Can someone help me find this component? Is it part of something else?

My wife has a 2002 Cabrio and we had the same problem and a Authorized dealer checked it out and stated that the Intake was clogged. WE had it cleaned for about $150.00 and it took care of the problem. Good Luck. I myself feel we have bought a lemon with this car. So many things are going wrong with it.

"Intake was clogged"?

I take it you mean, it needed to be cleaned?
