Keyless Entry Remote Range Short

Hello, tried searching the forums and didn't find anything on this topic, so here goes! We have a 2004 Jetta with keyless entry/alarm. The range on this is incredibly short, as in function is achieved within 2 feet of the car. While holding the remote up to my chin seems to extend the range to about 10-20 feet, my wife refuses to "look funny" by using this procedure. Bottom line, this is a 21st Century car and I expect the remote to work in a 21st Century fashion (ie from 20 feet away, without any special human-body-signal-amplification procedures required). Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I haven't heard about this complaint on Jetta, but VW had a service bulletin about fixing the receiver antenna wire location on Touaregs. A few owners reported the range DECREASED after their dealer did the "fix" - and discovered that the new antenna wire on the receiver had been broken when the tech did the work.
I'm assuming both your keys have the same problem - which should rule out the transmitters or batteries. Since it's a 2004 I'd work with the dealer - have him show you the range on other cars on his lot, then compare to yours. If yours is greatly reduced he should admit there is a problem and fix it under warranty. I'd bet there's an antenna problem with the receiver - either the location or damage.

I mentioned it to the dealer, and the service rep explained to me that he had the same problem on his own Jetta and his solution was to use the "remote-to-the-chin" method. If anyone knows of any TSBs or other documentation that states this is a problem, I would like to know so I can present this to the service department, for their disposition (and repair of my keyless entry!) It kind of stinks that I'm having to do the legwork and research on this when the VW service department's only job is to service VW's! Thank you for your reply TomB.

There was TSB 57-98-02 written for the Audi A4. The title is "Folding Key (Keyless Remote Transmitter), Increasing Distance Range." It involves adding/ extending an antenna to the existing one.

Haven't seen one on the Jetta, but it's likely a similar procedure.

If I can recall what I had read in my Jetta-TDI (03) owners manual the remote is short waved for safety. Once the doors are unlocked you have, I think, 20 seconds to open the door/s or the door/s will lock again.

Regardless of what the appropiate fix is, 2 feet from the car is unacceptable and abnormal (I get an easy 20-plus feet with both my New Beetle and Passat), as is holding the remote up to your chin.

This is a WARRANTY problem. Tell the dealer it is his job to make it right. No further debate.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. I searched the TSB's for my year on the VW tech site, and there's nothing similar to the Audi fix. My mother-in-law had the same problem with her Passat wagon and the dealer there replaced a chip in her keyfob, problem solved for her. No luck on that here with my dealer, but I will pursue it further with them. Once again, thanks!

This thread has been out there for quite some time, but I wanted to let you know that I am having the same problem with my 04 also. I did find a TSB (01-99-13) that is titled "Radio Frequency Remote Control Functions Only at Close Range". It involves a missing antenna wire in the vehicle. I'm taking mine to the dealer today with the TSB in hand to get this problem fixed.
